Jim Krahn, Inspired by "Light Blue"
I like blue because it makes me feel happy.
I like white because it reminds me of fluffy white clouds.
I like light blue because it reminds me of the sky.
By Jose, Age 8
We need to create an environment where each and every one of us can discover the artist in ourselves.
The art of poetry, writing, painting, sculpting, etc. is not a luxury or an elective -- it is a necessity!

Jamie Bilgo Bruchman, Inspired by "Crazy Green"
My color green sounds like a slow turtle
But it tastes like a fresh apple from the garden
It smells like a beautiful spring grass
But it looks strangely like a bucket of paint barely made from the store.
It feels like a soft pillow
It moves like a slow snail.
By Cassandra, Age 10
Working with plants in both my personal and professional life awakens a vibrant energy and a deeply rooted sense of well being within me. I search for the movement within growth, healing and adaptation, exploring the relationship between micro (cellular structures, tropism) and macro (whole-body, whole-plant) patterns of growth and change.
Experimentation with process--blending painting, printmaking, photographic and textile techniques--allows me to play with building up and breaking down patterns and textures in an effort to emulate and navigate complex visual, natural and emotional environments.
Jamie Bilgo Bruchman is a mixed-media painter and printmaker. The daughter of a horticulturist and an auto mechanic, her fascination with plants and making things by hand began at an early age. Jamie earned her BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and also studied abroad in Peru and Italy. She has exhibited throughout the Milwaukee area for over 10 years.
Currently an Artist in Residence at RedLine Milwaukee, Jamie will complete her 2-year program at the end of August 2016.

Doris Kucik, Inspired by "Sunset"
Sunset is beautiful.
The brightness and darkness come together
The color red and orange begin
The moon is getting brighter
So are the stars.
The sun is going West.
Down mountain and valley it went.
The sun is resting.
The moon comes out.
The sun is going to another hemisphere.
Peacefulness and night came and lullaby the people to sleep.
By Bao, Age 9
Doris began her painting career twenty-five years ago, studying at Harper College, the Studio of Long Grove and The Main Street Art Centre in the Chicago area and has had a successful career in healthcare.
Doris exhibits frequently in Illinois and Florida galleries and local art shows and has works in many private collections.
Doris has contributed to the SCORES Inspired Art effort in the past, and found it a challenging experience to depict the words of a child's poetry. She is happy to support the great work of the SCORES program in Milwaukee.

Jamie Wendling, Inspired by "Flower, Flower" & "Butterflies"
Flower, flower! Great and big! Happy colors! Indigo, red, violet too! Everything I wrote I love it too! By Isabel, Age 10 Butterflies make me feel happy. They are colorful and pretty. They flutter their wings to fly through the air. They fly through the air like they just don’t care. Butterflies land on flowers to get some food to survive in nature. By Nadia, Age 10 Jamie graduated from Carroll College in 2008 with a degree in art. She now paints in between spending time with her family. Visit Jamie's website |
Julianne Hunter, Inspired by "Yellow is Fun"
Yellow makes me feel happy.
Yellow is like a juicy banana.
Yellow is like bright school bus.
Yellow is like Sunday fun day.
Yellow is like sunshine sky.
Yellow is the best.
By Tianalyse, Age 11
"Play Outside" started with the hue of sunshine, a blank canvas made bright yellow. Over time, I added color to what I came to think of as a summer day unfolding. The last two strokes almost painted themselves - the suggestion of a figure of play. I later read "Yellow is Fun" and knew there was a match. It was as if the poet had written what I'd painted.
Having a background in preventative medicine as well as art, and working at one time for a large metro area soccer program, I know there's immense value in children being active outdoors. When I learned that America SCORES not only facilitates participation in sport but also coaches urban youth in the life-critical skills of writing and public speaking, I was more than happy to contribute my work.

I am scary
I am loud

I like storms
I do too
When we get together we have a rainstorm!
By Jesse, Age 9; Gerardo, Age10
Art has always been an essential part of my life. Art making is an outlet for self expression and taking time each day to center and look at my life with a new, more creative perspective. I am a licensed art therapist and I have the joy of helping others benefit, connect and grow through artistic expression. I love how are can bring larger communities closer and foster more intimate connections where people are inspired to help and support one another.
Milwaukee's program of America SCORES facilitates these important connections where the youth involved are taught not only to be self aware but also aware of each others needs and struggles. It is a privilege to be involved through their "Inspired Art" event.

Miranda Petroviak, Inspired by "Color Me Poetry"
There was a blue whale.
He was as hungry as the sky was for the water.
Soon he saw a red chili.
It was like fireworks (boom, boom) that went up into the sky.
Soon the blue whale got the chili and became purple like grapes
and bumpy like a chameleon.

I have a studio in Cedarburg and my work can be seen in Cedarburg at the Pink Llama Gallery, Cedarburg Art Museum, and Cedarburg Cultural Center. Also in Door County at Woodwalk Gallery.
I am very supportive in helping Milwaukee's urban youth.

Vicki Reed inspired by "Spring"
Flowers are growing.
Everything is showing.
Spring is Beautiful
Butterflies are here.
It’s this time of year.
Spring is Beautiful
There’s lots of rain.
So the flowers will gain.
Spring is Beautiful
All the baby animals come out.
I want to scream and shout.
Spring is Beautiful
By Dayneliz, Age 10
I am a former news photographer and magazine art editor, using plastic, vintage, pinhole and digital cameras to explore the natural environment. I experiment with alternative processes including lith, encaustic, lumen, and cyanotype. My work has been shown nationally and internationally in exhibits and magazines. More information and images are included on my website www.vickreed.com
"Tulips" is a lumen print made using a camera-less technique. To create a lumen print, plants are placed directly on light sensitive black and white photographic paper, then covered with a piece of glass and placed in the sun to develop. As the plants deteriorated, they react with the chemicals in the paper to create colors. Results are always a surprise. I scan the lumen and then make digital pigment prints.
I was drawn to Dayneliz's poem as spring is one of my favorite seasons. I love seeing the plants emerge and tulips are one of the first plants to pop up in my yard. I am honored to participate in this event and support Milwaukee's urban youth.

I feel stuck with the door shut
I feel dead instead

Never run and jump, I feel like I’m going to fall.

Jeff Sadowski inspired by "Winter"
There’s a white blanket
Covering the mountain tops
It’s so cold and white.
A tree without leaves
Brown like a big chocolate bar
When will leaves come again?
By Miguel, Age 8
Born and raised in Racine, Wisconsin, Jeff Sadowski has been known locally for his fantastic art since his early childhood. His ability to draw images from an inner world has been a gift.
In pursuit of artistic excellence and new experiences to feed his creativity, Jeff left Wisconsin for the Bay Area in 1982. In California he soaked up the culture, and also had the pleasure to work with some of the best known artists in the psychedelic and lowbrow art world. Some of these influences make their way into his own work today.
It was in California that Jeff mastered the airbrush and developed his own unique painting style. Acrylics are his chosen medium, but his use of deep rich colors gives his paintings the appearance of oils.
Jeff has been featured in galleries in California, Illinois, New Mexico and Wisconsin. He has done numerous album covers and has been published in two editions of Spectrum; The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art. One of his paintings has been shown in the Charles Allis Museum in Milwauke and he has been in two group shows at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
Regardless of the style-whimsical, psychedelic, surreal, or lowbrow, always unique - Jeff Sadowski is in a world all his own.

When we get together we have a rainstorm!
By Jesse, Age 9, and Gerardo, Age 10
My mixed media approach illustrates how a variety of moments define a total experience. The materials I use carry the stories of learning, recording, and processing life events: vintage school books, ledgers, hand-written correspondence. The materials themselves each have a history, which is then woven into the stories I tell by adding expressive layers of paint and drawing media.

Katie Stark inspired by "Planets"
Planets of different colors in space
With a slow song.
Shiny stars all over me
Down and up,
And right to left…
I see a moon to the left,
And to the right,
A sun shining at me.
By Brayan, Age 9
My artwork expresses that time cannot be stopped but moments can be recorded and be remembered. Not just the sight but the sounds and smells and textures.
That moment is not lost, it is kept to remember the good, the bad, the beauty, and the ugly. Every moment counts, take it all in and embrace the life that you have been given.
Because life is beautiful.

Bethany Staves inspired by "A Falling Star"
I saw a star that slides down the sky,
Blinding down south as I passed by
Too quick and too burning to hold,
Too lovely to become old or to be sold.
Good for only to make nice and beautiful wishes on…
And then forever to be gone.
By Rebecca, Age 10
I was inspired by Rebecca's description of her falling star. I could immediately see stars flickering and floating just out of reach. It has been an honor to work with such a wonderful poem.
Bethany Staves is a registered art therapist working at a nursing home. She focuses on facilitating connections between children and residents through the creation of art.

For me, the art of photography is portraying the familiar the way I see it, or imagine seeing it. I make images to express my love of the world. When I make images, it allows me to explore my world around me. I enjoy the resulting image and the response I receive from my community. That response is always different from individual to individual. It can be global, cultural, personal or a combination of all three. I hope that my work can cause a response in people's passion to relate to situations or objects. As in the deterioration of Wisconsin's barns, I'm inspired to document the changing condition with the hopes of inspiring people to preserve them or at least be more aware of them.
I'm always aware of my visual world. I see composition all around me. I compose photographic images everywhere I go. I see beautiful compositions in clouds, in building structures, and in landscapes of intersections, light and color. The work I create changes me. While my work is a reflection of myself, doing the work also changes me.
I always have a camera with me. Composing the image in my viewfinder is exciting, but so is changing it, seeing the print, and especially sharing the final image with others. I make altered images that don't look altered. Unaltered images that look altered. The effect forces the viewer into wondering about their own individual world and asking more about our living reality.
I've been photographing for over 45 years. I use digital cameras, iPhones and video cameras. I make photographs that document the world around me which I alter very slightly or rather significantly. I sketch with images. The computer allows me to paint my images with skill I lack as a painter. For me, the computer has enabled my photos to take on many lives, to let me take a favorite and recreate it, bringing it to a new level I could only imagine before. Now my work is truly living and never static.

Sunset is beautiful.
The brightness and darkness come together
The color red and orange begin
The moon is getting brighter
So are the stars.
The sun is going West.
Down mountain and valley it went.
The sun is resting.
The moon comes out.
The sun is going to another hemisphere.
Peacefulness and night came and lullaby the people to sleep.
