Tony Kinnard, Inspired by "The Weirdest Hershey Bear"

He was born as a chocolate
and shaped as a bear.

He’s a red striped bear
With his l’il cool mohawk hair.

He’s cute and really crazy.
He’s sleepy and extremely lazy.

His tail is really small and belly really big.
His ears are wiggly
and he laughs like a pig.

He is really fat
and soft as a cat.
He only likes one book
and is a good cook.

By Gladys, Age 9

I  like the idea of a bear with a mohawk, since I do indie comics with a bit of a punk edge. My main comic series is about two kids names Drannik and Lizzep who get into mischief.

Picture
Clarey Wamhoff, Inspired by "Sunset"

Sunset is beautiful.
The brightness and darkness come together
The color red and orange begin
The moon is getting brighter
So are the stars.
The sun is going West.
Down mountain and valley it went.
The sun is resting.
The moon comes out.
The sun is going to another hemisphere.
Peacefulness and night came and lullaby the people to sleep.

By Bao, Age 9

Anonymous, Inspired by "M&M Delight"

I am an M&M
The best I can be
I am the brightest color
You have ever seen
I can be stuffed with salty pretzels
Or a nut
But even if I’m plain
I can be as sweet as a candy cane
So use your brain
Make a choice
I won’t melt in your hand
Just in your mouth

By Imani, Age 10

Picture
John Eggebrecht, Inspired by "Roberto" & "A World Without the Sun"

I am like fire,
burning when my brother gets me mad.
I am helpful,
doing jobs for my mom.
I move swiftly,
like a cheetah on the soccer field.
I am the sunset.
Colors fade when I leave the room.
I am a shadow.
Unnoticeable.

By Roberto, Age 9

Picture
A world without the sun
Would be no fun
I would not see
The beautiful green trees
The trees would die
And take with them my air supply
I would not see the beautiful light
That is so super-duper bright

A world without the sun
Would not let me see
The beautiful blue sea
All around me

Janet Hubbard, Inspired by "Mother Nature Epistle"

All different colors.
Summer is green and blue in the sky.
Winter is white and bright.
Colors make people feel good.

You are our heart Mother Nature.

By Cindy, Age 9

Artists always are looking for inspiration and its always wonderful to find something that speaks to them. The opportunity to read these poems was great, and to see these young people involved with art is wonderful too.

Janet started her career in art when she was in high school and the few years beyond. After some time away, she is now retired, back in school and continuing with her passion for art.

is going to enjoy it.

Shari Brzinski, Inspired by "My Color Blue"

It sounds like the lake moving.
It tastes like a blueberry.
It smells like flower.
It looks like water.
It feels like birds.
It moves like waves.

By Citlali, Age 9

Art has always been an essential part of my life. Art making is an outlet for self expression and taking time each day to center and look at my life with a new, more creative perspective. I am a licensed art therapist and I have the joy of helping others benefit, connect and grow through artistic expression. I live how art can bring larger communities closer and foster more intimate connections where people are inspired to help and support one another.

Milwaukee's program of America SCORES facilitates these important connections where the youth involved are taught not only to be self aware but also aware of each others needs and struggles. It is a privilege to be involved through their "Inspired Art" event.

Doris Kucik, Inspired by "Let It All Go"

Butterflies make me feel happy.
They are colorful and pretty.
They flutter their wings to fly through the air.
They fly through the air like they just don’t care.
Butterflies land on flowers to get some food to survive in nature.

Picture
Sue Lawton, Inspired by "A Falling Star"

I saw a star that slides down the sky,
Blinding down south as I passed by
Too quick and too burning to hold,
Too lovely to become old or to be sold.
Good for only to make nice and beautiful wishes on…
And then forever to be gone.

By Rebecca, Age 10

As both an artist and writer, I enjoyed reading the beautiful works of these young creative people. My own children attend Milwaukee Public Schools and it feels good to collaborate with and help their peers. Exposure and participation in the arts is important for all of us and helps to unite us as human beings.

Picture
Cardi Toellner, Inspired by "Flower, Flower"

Flower, flower!
Great and big!
Happy colors!
Indigo, red, violet too!
Everything I wrote I love it too!

By Isabel, Age 10

Having been born into a family of artists helped me to grow up learning to be aware of my surroundings and to see all of the fascinating things in it. I've studied scientific illustration and love gardening so I can relate to Isabel's poem about "happy colors".

Urban youth can benefit greatly from the programs that America SCORES provides. Sports and the arts teach many skills and help to expand children's worlds which in turn helps to increase their chances of a better life.

Picture
Barbara Grant, Inspired by "Eagles"

Eagles-
Fast as a roller coaster,
Hungry as sharks,
Flying higher than a jet,
Vision like telescopes,
Wings as wide as a lunch table,
Claws as sharp as swords.
Watch out for eagles!

By Eric, Age 10

This is my second time participating in the Inspired Art fundraiser. I have a lot of respect for this program that aims to bring out the best in kids. I love the balance of mind and body challenges.

I chose the poem, "Eagles" because of its forceful energy energy and lunch table reference, which makes me smile each time I recite it.

Too lovely to become old or to be sold.

By Rebecca, Age 10

When reading the poem "Falling Star", what first came to mind was this celestial mother-like being who created stars to wish upon. They would burst forth from her heart with radiant sparks and fall down to cover the eat with wishes to be.

I am honored to be able to use my creativity to support a great cause, especially with this piece.

Cassie Genc is a Milwaukee-based illustrator and painter. Her love for whimsical characters and escapism motivate her art and style. Cassie works as a textile artists and also shows her paintings in Milwaukee.

Troy Freund, Inspired by "Me" & "My Heart"

I’m really pretty.
I’m really nice to people.
I’m my own flower.

By Leylani, Age 9

My heart is like lava from the deep, deep volcano
It burns and it’s so hot
It reminds me of the time when I got burned by the oven
It makes me feel like hot fudge on ice cream.
I want to put more lava in my heart.

By Citlali, Age 9

I was born in Milwaukee and spent my younger years going to school at 21st Street School. Even at a young age, my creativity was encouraged by my family and by my teachers. I eventually ended up living in Madison, but I have a heart for Milwaukee, especially the youth. I am so happy to be able to contribute in this way and was inspired by the beautiful and simple words in Citlali's poem about the color blue.

Currently, I am a full time artist and face and body painter. My creative skill-set comes from a background of artistic mentors, 11 years as a cake decorator, and schooling as a graphic artist. I love finding artistic ways to give back to the community.

Picture
Serena Weits, Inspired by "Planets"

Planets of different colors in space
With a slow song.
Shiny stars all over me
Down and up,
And right to left…
I see a moon to the left,
And to the right,
A sun shining at me.

By Brayan, Age 9

A Milwaukee based artists and graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Serena works with carious materials to create layered imagery. It can be collage, paintings or installations that take on a dream-like, stream of conscious quality. The colorful, finely detailed works direct the viewer inward, toward their own memory and imagination.

"Planets (with a slow song)" was inspired by the wonderful thoughts and words of the young poet Brayan.

Serena has sought to be an artist since she was a young child. Her focus on art has continued throughout her life and she will always set aside studio time for the meditative process of making art.

Susan Anderson, Inspired by "Star"

By Edwin, Age 9

I made my first pot in high school and knew I would be a potter. Making things with your hands is something that teaches us in a unique way. Clay has led me to contemplate and learn about nature, physics, chemistry and my connection to humanity. I want to share my love of life and beauty and help kids imagine in a new way.

By Nayeli, Age 10

I began to focus on making art as a small child. Children are so open to learning ways to express themselves. I believe that SCORES offers an important opportunity to kids in our community. I loved reading the poetry the children created and since color is most important to me as an artist i chose a poem about it.

Sandra Dempsey, Inspired by "What's In Gerardo"

My feet have power.
I use them to kick the ball hard.
My heart has love.
I always make my baby sister laugh.
My brain has ideas.
I build big ships and cars with Legos.
I am Gerardo
And I am full of good things.

By Gerardo, Age 9

I love to create and meditate. When I picked Gerardo's poem I got very inspired by the final sentence, "I am full of good things." A needed statement to overcome any circumstance. When we remember how many good things we are, life takes shape in a way that is positive and optimistic. If you look at the design almost every line of the poem is represented.

My Feet have power (the orange flames which represent power)
I use them to kick the ball hard (there are lots of little balls)
My heart has love (lots of green hearts)
I always make my baby sister laugh (green veins curved as smiles)
My brain has ideas (buds about to sprout to represent ideas)
I build big ships and cars with Legos
I am Gerardo
And I am full of good things.

Katina Jordan, Inspired by "Let It All Go"

How can somebody you love
Bring so much pain like a tornado hitting?

How can somebody you love
Bring so much pain to you like a wound on your knee?

How can somebody you love bring so much pain
Causing tears like a waterfall full of lies?

How can somebody you love
Be so painful?

By Lea, Age 11

I began my life as an artist when I was twelve while watching my mother paint. I was lucky to have her as an inspiration and an example. I continued painting and drawing throughout high school and college. I graduated from college with a degree in graphic design. My passion is still art, creating and shaping what is beautiful in this world.

I want to support young people who want to be involved in art. The poem I chose is a bit heartbreaking for an eleven year old to write. I made this painting to give Lea some hope that life is not all pain.  Fly High, Lea.

Lauren Zens, Inspired by "Ballerinas"

Ballerinas twirl gracefully
Caring about their performance.
Dancing as if there is no tomorrow,

By Jessica, Age 9

My medium and style for the past six years has been geometric, hard-edge, abstract acrylic painting. I have minimal experience with drawing, but I was interested in a softer, more tangible subject, especially considering the youth and identity development goals of America SCORES. The glass did end up leaning more towards my over elaborate linear tendencies, but contrast between hard vs soft lines and black/white versus color, such as in this piece, constructs a strong visual emphasis that I took to achieve in any art I create.

I'm an engineer with a passion for art and music. Creating pottery is my creative outlet and soothes my soul, much like playing music in my band, Ballmer's Curve. I'm inspired by the unknown of what different glaze combinations will lead to in a pottery piece. I'm excited to make a connection between the poems from our urban youth that makes SCORES the success it is today.
