On June 25, nearly 200 youth from across the city kicked off the inaugural Soccer Stars summer program. Soccer Stars was formed to give kids from underserved communities a chance to play together in a safe and fun environment. Every Thursday, Uihlein Soccer Park played host to 12 different Boys & Girls Club locations from the north and south side of Milwaukee. Special thanks go out to LaNelle Ramey for helping secure all the Boys and Girls Clubs locations. At the halfway point of each league outing the participants were treated to an inspiring discussion on topics like teamwork, leadership and commitment by America SCORES Executive Director Kate Carpenter. At the end of each outing the coaches chose from their team a Champion of Character who received a t-shirt and a soccer ball. Coach Taff, who worked with a SCORES team during the winter at Lafollette also had a Soccer Stars team and commented this, “I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the kids who I worked with in SCORES during the school year remember their skills, use them, and ,the icing on the cake – explain some of the concepts and teach them to their new summer teammates. Made my heart so proud!” The partnership between Milwaukee Kickers, Boys and Girls Club and America SCORES produced smiles, laughs, goals and most importantly developed champions of character. |
