Greta Collopy, Inspired by "A Peaceful Blue Sky"

A peaceful blue sky looking down at me,
Hear the beautiful and peaceful rustling trees.
Look at the sky, how it looks at you,
The relaxing colors of the sky are white and blue.
To fall asleep, look up and just stare,
Always remember who’s watching you from up there.
The sky is white,
The sky is blue.
How you look at the sky is how it will look at you.

Omar L., age 11

Ms. Collopy comes from a family of painters. Art has always been an important part of her life. She has lived on both coasts and a few states in between. She graduated from Marquette University. She and her husband John live in Shorewood and have four grown children.

Her work has been featured in local galleries, and is currently represented by Mille Tesori Studio in Thiensville, WI.

"Making art, especially a specific piece, is sometimes a challenge, but sharing a work for a worthy cause is always a joy."

What if there was a frog that was a DJ?
It would be slippery.
It would be noisy.
It would be weird.
He would play swamp music.
What if there was a frog that was a DJ?

Heather Braatz, Inspired by "When an Angel Sings"

Tears dropping, lives stopping,
A bee sting,
All of this would not make an angel sing.

Roses dying, babies crying,
Rain dropping, love stopping
Would not make an angel sing.

Babies born, field of new corn,
A wedding ring
Would probably make an angel sing

Life carried on, love wandering around
People caring, love God pondering down
Would make an angel sing.

Kayla S., age 10

"I was inspired by the poem "When an Angel Sings" because it conveyed a message of hope. I think the youth look to their elders for inspiration and hope. I feel it is our responsibility to give it to them. I began my art career because art was a safe, therapeutic outlet for me to express myself. Art defines me and compels me forward; challenges me to inspire others and to keep seeking and expressing. Because I have been touched in this world, perhaps even by an angel, I try to touch others, especially through my art."

I have a nice person in me.
That loves me.
That cannot scare people off.
That is a good friend.
That loves to play with me.

I have a girl in me.
That wants to make a lot of friends.
That needs friendship in it.
That has my world in it.

I have a secret hiding spot
that has my heart in it.
And the heart is not mean to people,
It is kind.

You’ve never seen my other side
Like times I got mad and started to cry
I don’t like to show my other side
Because on that side I have no pride
I really hate my other side
It’s just not me, I don’t know why
Bad things happen on my other side
Like this one time I lied and lied
There’s things I can’t say on my other side
For example I can’t say I tried
I’ll never show my other side
Because I try, I don’t cry, I don’t lie
And I have pride

A mighty pine tree, that’s me.

My roots are firmly in the ground.

Children will fall from my branches
And live their new lives.

By Citlali V., age 10

"I have been drawing ever since I can remember. I studied art for one year at a community college and have worked as a professional portrait artist for most of my adult life, drawing everything from babies to pet birds. Drawing portraits did not offer the creative outlet I needed so I dove back into painting in 2006. Creating art using the human form was a natural choice for me. I am drawn to the way the body has the ability to express emotion in both movement and, most especially, in stillness. I strive to capture that beauty and emotion in my paintings in the hopes that each painting will reveal something special to share with the viewer."

"I loved reading through all of the poems and was so impressed by the talent and depth of all these young writers. It was hard to pick one! The poem "My Special Person really touched me and actually made me cry. I finally chose "Mighty Pine Tree" because I loved Citlali's message of family, strength and love."

"I have been interested in all types of art since I was young. I consider myself an amateur visual artist, specializing in acrylic/oil painting and outdoor/nature photography.

I remember how important encouragement is for a child. I found the Inspired Art Project a perfect opportunity to give a child that feeling of encouragement and accomplishment by creating a one of a kind piece of art based directly off of their words.

Being an amateur artist, this poem not only Inspired the look of this painting, but also inspired me as a person to try something new by creating this piece and putting myself out there."

Art, Inspired by Kids
The SCORES Inspired Art Project takes poems produced by SCORES youth and asks local artists to create one of a kind pieces inspired by their words. As a part of a new annual tradition, each piece will be photographed and compiled in a graphic collection of SCORES art and imagery. The project offers a new way to bring the words of SCORES youth to life. Submitted and accepted pieces will be featured in the SCORES auction on November 14th, 2009 at the Eisner Museum of Advertising and Design. Even if you are not an artist, you can be involved by reading the poems and sharing in the beauty of the art. By participating in this cycle of inspiration, you are giving a child a chance to be heard and recognized. You are helping to create something beautiful.

I almost made it to the ball,
Somehow I began to fall.
I felt some pain.
It started to rain.

I had a clean shirt,
until it got full of dirt.
The other team was so lame.
I’m no longer the same.

I wished we would win.
The ball never went in.
I was shoved out the door.
out of the sports core.

That was my worst game,
I got out of the Hall of Fame.
My parents made me pay,
I had to go to BALLET!!!!

Amanda recently graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a BA in photography. She started abpIMAGES, a photography business that caters to weddings, senior pictures, portraits, and special events as well as freelance assisting.

"I was drawn to the poem "The Loss" because of its comical and ironic tone. I imagined the image much like the drawings of Norman Rockwell - creative and delightful. It's just a picture that makes you smile.

I also created the image "Sphere of Community" as a never before seen kind of landscape. I wanted to represent this community as a kind of utopia. The use of both photography and Photoshop manipulation helps emphasize the beauty of a world that is properly cared for"

I have a monkey inside of me
That loves to play.
That cannot stop jumping.
That is small, but strong.
That is very crazy.

I have a fighter in me
That wants competition.
That needs strength
That has bravery.

I have a box inside of me.
That has untold secrets
That keeps me going
That makes me who I am.

Derrick P., age 11

What inspired me is: A three-fold integration of colors; red, blue and yellow and the three-way harmony of voices, art, and physical striving, and finding one's place and power in one's world. Derrick's poem of what he has inside is also three-part: the monkey, the fighter, the inner box of untold secrets.

Art and color has always inspired and soothed me.  As soon as I could hold a crayon I began to use art as a way to explore who I was and what I wanted in life. It helped me connect with my inner power and soothed me to look at harmonious colors when I felt powerless. I was inspired by so many poems written by the very real children participating in SCORES, but Derrick's poem "What's Inside of Me"  was so beautifully primary, describing his soul searching and honestly looking at himself, finding his strength and challenges. The words he chose provided me with wonderful imagery to capture all the feelings in a growing body, mind, and spirit.

I like the SCORES program, offering balance, a beautiful integration of soccer(sport),  writing poetry and painting drawing(Art) , and community outreach and responsibility!

Although I earned a BS-Art Degree from UW Madison, my work began with a gift from my preschool daughter, turning a craft project into a business! I help others celebrate special people and occasions by creating one-of-a-kind, personalized mosaic style planters and caddies. Simple materials like clay and glass, when combined with color and expression, can me so meaningful. Words are not just for paper.

"What I have Inside of Me" by Derrick P. inspired me to create a pencil caddy which captures the essence of the monkey, fighter, and box, that "makes who I am."

I'm honored to help Milwaukee's urban youth by contributing this piece to the 2009 Inspired Art Project.

I grew up in Milwaukee. It is a great city. I was sheltered from poverty and urban problems in a loving yet conservative Italian family. We worked and player together in a safe neighborhood on the North Side.

My mother was a great inspiration to me and encouraged me to be creative even though my drawings were not accurate or even pretty. I took art classes in college, and found joy but not fame. I found creative outlets in cooking, gardening, drawing and sewing. Today, my creative talents transform existing art, you could say recycled art, found on vintage record album covers, contemporary DVD's and CD's, and old 45's. These colorful artistic covers are transformed and embellished by me to become wearable art for ladies and men - handbags, purses, club bags, scrapbooks, and more. Each was originally an "inspired art" project for the creator of the music/media cover, then for me the transforming artist and now for our young urban poet who re-inspired the piece through colorful words.

Thank you my young poet from Milwaukee!

I grew up in Milwaukee, and have been a creative soul ever since I can remember. From markers, to paints, to glitter, my art supplies have always outnumbered the clothes in my closet. And for as long as I can remember, my dream was to become and artist. Although I never made my name famous in the art world, I continue to create art I love.

When I heard about the Inspired Art Project, I was extremely excited because it coincided with my newest niche - children's-themed canvas paintings.

I chose the poem entitled, "What I Have Inside Me," because to me it means everyone is beautiful inside and out. And true happiness lies in this discovery. I think this is important for children to know as they are learning and growing.

Those interested in seeing more of my paintings can find them in the "fine art" section of bb10creative.com. My best friends and I all share artistic talent, so you'll find our design work on the website as well.

James Steeno, a native of Wisconsin, is an independent artist and photographer in Milwaukee, WI. Born and raised in Green Bay, he began art classes at a young age. With emphasis in graphic design and illustration from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1995. While at UW-Oshkosh, he studied illustration under Li Hu and graphic design under Mee Wha Lee, and was the editorial cartoonist for the Advanced Titan newspaper. An award-winning illustrator, his artwork has been featured in the Wisconsin Review. James has participated in art shows around the state and hosts his own gallery event annually with other Wisconsin artists. Currently, James is employed as a full-time creative director and resides in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Milwaukee with his wife and their daughter.

"I began my art career as soon as I could hold a pencil to draw and color. Art and drawing has always given me a direction in life in good time and in troubled times. When I was young, drawing was a way to explore any thought, curiosity, or daydream in total freedom, and with no wrong answers. The Inspired Art even is a great way to share a lifelong pursuit of art with future generations of Milwaukee, and inspire this worthy gift that they may share with others."

"This project touched my heart, for poetry and art had consistently been a tremendous outlet for me as a child and teen. I have also always worked with youth in one way or another and stand behind any program that encourages and enhances positive self-development. I am a self-trained, amateur artist (except for a few classes here and there), with a love for painting women and children in colorful, whimsical, culturally diverse formats.

I have donated all of my art primarily to school fundraisers and to friends and family. A new personality emerges from each face I paint which just makes me want to keep on painting! I actually began this piece a number of years ago and became very busy with my yoga career (teaching yoga to children and teens) and it has sat in my back hallway yearning to be completed. When a friend contacted me inquiring if I would be interested in doing a piece, it was just the encouragement I needed and I was thrilled to have an opportunity to finish my painting and contribute to a wonderful program!

The canvas originally presented only two girls, and after being inspired by the poem "G-Girls" I decided to add a third as a representation of friendship, mentoring, respect, kindness, compassion, love and the sharing of laughter and 'good times.' I also have two magnificent teenage daughters who are my constant inspiration and have an abundance of lip-gloss scattered in numerous places throughout the house!

Jeffrey masterfully conveyed the many dimensions of the human soul. My goal was to create a piece of art that honored his intention. Although I work primarily as a photographer, Jeffrey's poem inspired me to use two different mediums to portray the complexity of the subject. First, I created an oil painting of swirling colors, then I photographed different sections of the painting. Finally, I created four separate photographic prints; one to coincide with each of the poem's four verses.

Which contains my parents love and
The special events that have shaped my life.
Children will fall from my branches
And live their new lives.

I think that I shall never kiss
A boy as terrible as Bobby Bliss.
He smells so bad just like a skunk.
I wish I could lock him in my trunk.
I will take him to a fancy dance.
Put him in a box and mail him to France.
And once I get rid of him,
I’ll make a date with Jungle Jim
We’ll go to Pulaski and take a swim.

Never give up when you’re feeling blue because
  you lost someone
There’s hope that you’ll gain someone new
Never give up when the person is gone
Because there will always be a new dawn
Never give up when something goes wrong
Give it another shot to keep movin’ on
Never give up for the sun is shining
With our loved ones there telling us to keep trying!
Never give up when something occurs
Because your life will be a blur
Never give up when something is wrong
Never give up because you are strong
Never give up.

Love is pink like a rose.
It tickles through my heart.
It reminds me of a first snowfall.
It makes me feel like a princess.
It makes me want to sing like Hilary Duff.

Fall is brown.
Fall is a frown.
Fall is when I get found.
Fall is when people lose one pound.

Spring is yellow.
Spring is mellow.
Spring is when I make jello.
Spring is when people say “hello”.

Winter is white.
Winter is bright.
Winter makes people stay up all night.
Winter has not enough light.

Summer is green.
Summer is not mean.
Summer tells people not to wear jeans.
Summer makes a beautiful queen.

Seasons are wonderful.
Seasons are beautiful.
Seasons do make people love them.

I like seasons because they are colorful.

Crystal clear water falling from the gray dark sky.
Sparkling tears from children.
After the rain is gone, a beautiful,
  colorful rainbow comes out.
Everyone comes out and enjoys this moment.

What if there was a frog that was a DJ?
It would be slippery.
It would be noisy.
It would be weird.
He would play swamp music.
What if there was a frog that was a DJ?

Black is my favorite color.
Black is as black as a cat.
Black may be death but to me it’s love.
Black may be goth but it’s really a color.
Black is on my fingers, black is on my toes.
Black is a bat, but it’s really a hat.
Black is beautiful, black is romantic.
Black is black and it is my favorite color.

By Jordan D., age 11
Black as a bear
Black as the sky at night
Black as a beast – scary in the night
Black as stripes on a zebra
Black as a chalkboard
Black as the street we drive on
Black as my hat I wear every day
Black as an owl sitting in a tree
Black as a bumblebee’s body
Black as me!

Blue makes me lazy
Pink makes me bored
Black makes me sleepy
And yellow makes me hot.

Red makes me mad
White makes me forget
Orange makes me crazy
And gray makes me ugly.

But a rainbow… A rainbow makes me joyful

My passion for clay began in 2003 when I found myself standing in the ceramics room of Waukesha West High School. This is when I met Peter Loose, one of the biggest influences in my life. Over those four years of working with him , I progressed from taking one section of ceramics my freshman year, to four sections my senior year. At this time I also advanced to working in a local clay studio the Waukesha Clay Art Guild. Pete had introduced me to Raku in the spring of 2004 and I have embrenced the element of surprise ever since.

My work not only represents my personality but also the fact that I like to push things to the edge, both physically (pushing the clay body to its’ limits) and also in terms of acceptability. I love to create things that keep the mind boggled, leaving questions like, what and why. To me this shows it is something original, it has never been done before and it gives me satisfaction knowing no two people get the same thing from it.

I am intelligent
I hear my mom when she calls me
I see bad things
I am 10 years old
I dream good things
I try to make a difference by stopping fights
I am grateful for what I have

In my studio, time, deadlines, and responsibilities must disappear for my individuality, energy, and ingenuity to triumph. The mood, rhythm and ideology of rock music compel me to paint a new artistic language. Self-knowledge dictates that I must express through creation as opposed to recreation. Independent and free by nature, I explore only uncharted artistic territory. Hopefully, my new language will engage a viewer in a dialogue between my artwork and personal identity. My art ignites human imagination, a place where boundaries and restrictions do not exist. To me, this embodies true freedom. True freedom emancipates my soul.

I like to draw things.
Girls are very smart and brave.
We can play soccer.

By Cassandra A., age 11

Maureen is an Assistant Professor of Visual Arts at Cardinal Stritch University. She responds to the Inspired Art Project:

I was drawn to Cassandra's work because I like haiku poems and I immediately connected with her first line, "I like to draw." I love to draw too. I also like that the poem speaks of the strength of girls. The structure of the artwork is based off the structure of a haiku: three sentences (three panels), the first having five syllables (five painted soccer balls), the second line having seven syllables (seven painted soccer balls), and the third line having five syllables (five painted soccer balls). The words of her poem gave me the direction I needed to develop the images you see throughout the panels. I had fun producing this project and I hope Cassandra Enjoys it too.
