AMERICA SCORES MILWAUKEE LAUNCHES "HEALTHY GOALS" CAMPAIGN AND INVITES LOCAL CORPORATIONS TO PARTNER IN THE COMMUNITY EFFORT

MILWAUKEE, WI (January 9, 2012) - America SCORES Milwaukee, an affiliate of America SCORES, a national organization that works to enrich the lives of urban youth through regular participation in soccer, creative writing and service learning, has received a UnitedHealth HEROES grant to support their student-athletes Spring 2012 semester of service campaign that will focus on healthy eating and promote physical activities within their community.

SCORES students will kick-off their semester of service with community partner Sweet Water Foundation on January 17th and 20th in support of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. During the kick-off event, the students will get hands-on experience as they learn about community gardens, aquaponics (a synergistic growing technique in which both fish and plants grow together and benefit each other in the same systems), and composting at Sweet Water Organics Fish and Vegetable Farm (2151 South Robinson Avenue). In addition they will learn how their environment directly and significantly impacts their health and the health of their community, and provide them the opportunity to develop service-learning projects that can affect positive change on health and obesity issues.

“For our students, their experience at the farm will be their first connection to a community partner that is working diligently to change the health of our urban community for the better,” said Kate Carpenter, America SCORES Milwaukee Executive Director. “It’s our hope that other like-minded corporations and organizations that are also working to improve Milwaukee area health outcomes will be motivated and inspired to join our students’ efforts.”

Beginning in March, applying what they learned at the farm, the students will spend 10 weeks identifying things in their community that are healthy or unhealthy, and use the ideas as a framework for their team service projects. On April 20th, SCORES students, coaches and families will join community partners from Starbucks to celebrate Global Youth Service day by building raised garden beds at Sweet Water Organics as a unified day of action in preparation for the summer farming season. A showcase of their completed projects will be presented to the community at Uihlein Soccer Park (7101 West Good Hope Road) on June 1st.
If you would like to join community health advocates United Healthcare, Sweet Water Organics Fish and Vegetable Farm, Starbucks Coffee Company, State Farm Insurance, and Milwaukee Public Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative and partner with America SCORES Milwaukee, please contact Christina Lopez at clopez@americascores.org or 414-358-2510.

SCORE FORE MILWAUKEE’S YOUTH AT CHARITABLE GOLF OUTING
“Swing Fore Soccer” Joint Fundraising Event

MILWAUKEE, WI (July 26th, 2011) – Through a collaborative effort between the Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club (Milwaukee’s largest soccer organization) and America SCORES Milwaukee (Milwaukee’s only urban soccer, writing, and community service after-school program), you, your family, your friends and your co-workers are invited to participate in the first “Swing Fore Soccer” Golf Outing.

To be held on Friday, September 16 at Silver Spring Golf & Banquet Center in Menomonee Falls, the event will bring together a diverse and dedicated group of individuals who will enjoy a barbecue lunch, 18 holes of golf, and a post-play dinner with silent auction among those who wish to better the lives of our community’s children.

“As school-based physical activities dwindle, and with household finances tight, many children aren’t afforded the opportunity to be a part of a team, to have a soccer jersey or to travel to a game,” said Kate Carpenter, America SCORES Milwaukee Executive Director. “One hundred percent of the proceeds from the outing and auction will benefit disadvantaged youth from the Greater Milwaukee area.”

“Both organizations share a common vision to provide all children of the Greater Milwaukee area the opportunity to play soccer,” said Alvaro Garcia-Velez, Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club Executive Director. “The benefits of youth soccer are endless – improved physical health, camaraderie, improved confidence and commitment to an activity that keeps our youth positively engaged during after-school and weekend hours.”
For more information about and to register for the golf outing, go to www.swingforesoccer.com.

GIVE YOUR MOST AT THE SECOND ANNUAL
“INSPIRED ART PROJECT” FUNDRAISING EVENT

MILWAUKEE, WI (September 27, 2010) - America SCORES Milwaukee, an affiliate of America SCORES which is a national organization that works to enrich the lives of inner-city youth through regular participation in soccer, creative writing and service-learning, is hosting its second annual “Inspired Art Project” fundraising event on Friday, October 22nd from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Moct, pronounced “Most,” located in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward (240 East Pittsburgh Avenue).

The Inspired Art Project takes poems produced by SCORES youth and asks local artists to create and donate one of a kind pieces inspired by their words that are then sold to the highest bidder that evening.  The money raised from the event auction and ticket sales is essential to supporting and keeping the SCORES programming offered to Milwaukee’s urban youth active and growing.

“Inspired Art introduces the words, reflections and experiences of SCORES youth into the local community,” said Kate Carpenter, Executive Director of America SCORES Milwaukee. "Attendance and the money raised from last year’s first Inspired Art event exceeded our expectations.  Our goal is to surpass those numbers this year."

2010 AMERICA SCORES MILWAUKEE “KICK, CLICK & SCORE” EVENT
Executive Director’s 12-hour juggle to fight childhood obesity struggle

MILWAUKEE, WI (September 8, 2010) – Kate Carpenter, Executive Director of America SCORES Milwaukee which is an after-school program that works to enrich the lives of inner-city youth through regular participation in soccer, creative writing and service-learning, will put her best foot forward on Thursday, September 23rd as she juggles a soccer ball off of it from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Red Arrow Park (920 N. Water St.) in downtown Milwaukee to raise awareness and dollars for the nonprofit organization.

“Our goal is to raise $10,000 by having America SCORES Milwaukee staff and supporters including members of the Milwaukee Wave and Milwaukee Kickers soccer teams juggle a soccer ball non-stop for 12 hours,” said Carpenter.  “I will be doing the majority of the juggling and hope that due to our strong core of dedicated volunteers and to our high profile downtown location that office workers will participate as well by donating money in return for the chance to juggle which will give me some brief breaks throughout the day.”  In addition to some Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club members juggling, the organization has generously kicked off the fundraiser by offering to match up to the first $1,500 donated that day.

The “Kick, Click & Score” event is being held in September to highlight National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and the America SCORES Chicago staff and their supporters will be simultaneously conducting their own “Kick, Click & Score” event in downtown Chicago.

“We thought it would be a great idea for both cities to host the event on the same day at the same time to add a competitive element to the fundraising challenge,” said Carpenter.  “We’ll need a lot of Milwaukee jugglers and donations so we don’t come in second to our well meaning neighbors to the south.”

How the event works:
1)  Kick – Keep the soccer ball moving and off the ground by challenging others with a monetary pledge
to juggle to support the organization
2)  Click – Donate online and follow the event’s progress throughout the day at http://kickclickscore.org/ or
write a check and mail it to America SCORES Milwaukee (7101 W. Good Hope Road, Milwaukee, WI
     53223)
3)  Score – Give Milwaukee youth the tools to succeed on the field and in the classroom

“Childhood obesity is reaching epidemic rates and is quickly becoming one of the biggest obstacles American youth face in establishing healthy lives both physically and mentally,” said Carpenter.  “The event is a light hearted way to raise dollars for a very serious issue and to keep SCORES programming, which is an ongoing adversary of childhood obesity, active and growing.”

CALLING ALL ARTISTS FOR SECOND ANNUAL INSPIRED ART EVENT

MILWAUKEE, WI (August 4, 2010) - America SCORES Milwaukee, an after-school program that works to enrich the lives of inner-city youth through regular participation in soccer, creative writing and service-learning, is calling all artists to participate in the second annual America SCORES Milwaukee Inspired Art event.

"The Inspired Art event is a fantastic way to bring our community together by showcasing the artistic talents Milwaukee has to offer while bettering the lives of urban children. The premise of Inspired Art is to provide artists with a non-traditional inspiration: a poem written by SCORES youth. From that inspiration, artists then create one of a kind pieces of any artistic medium." said Kate Carpenter, Executive Director of America SCORES Milwaukee.

Submitted and accepted pieces will be photographed and compiled in a graphic collection of SCORES art and imagery to be displayed on the event website. Each piece will then be featured in a gallery-style auction during the Inspired Art fundraising event on the evening of Friday, October 22nd at The Moct bar in Milwaukee’s Third Ward.

"We're hoping for strong participation from Milwaukee’s thriving artistic community,” said Carpenter. “Ultimately, this project will bring together a large group of passionate and creative people looking to highlight youth voice, creative expression, and art. It’s a compelling new way to bring the words of SCORES youth to life and funds raised will be used to offer some of the highest quality after-school programming to our community’s inner-city youth."

2010 AMERICA SCORES MILWAUKEE WORLD CUP EVENT
Celebrating the world’s #1 sport with the community’s #1 priority – our kids

“No other globally recognized and universally popular sporting event better reflects what SCORES students represent than the World Cup,” said Kate Carpenter, Executive Director of America SCORES Milwaukee.  “Because the SCORES program is comprised of children from a variety of cultures and features soccer as its physical activity and team building component, SCORES’ goal is to promote how amazing the World Cup experience can be whether you’re a player or a fan.”

Along with SCORES’ members, volunteers from the Marquette University Men’s and Women’s Soccer Club teams will assist and coach the kids as they participate in soccer skills-based games and drills in between watching World Cup highlights for inspiration.  Having worked up an appetite, they will then be treated to a cookout and invited to stay for an afternoon viewing party to watch the U.S.A. vs. England game in the Marquette Union Sports Annex with their families.

“While donations are always appreciated, that’s not the event’s focus,” said Carpenter.  “The focus is to reward, empower, unite and thank all of the children and adults who enable SCORES to play a positive and integral role in the Milwaukee community.”
